This first edition book, The Mandrake Root, was written
by Martha Ostenso (1900 – 1963)
who was a North American novelist and screenwriter.
This story revolves around Lydie Clarnece, the wife of
Andrew who takes on a border in their orchard house by the name of Eric Stene.
Eric’s grandfather, Doctor Edvard,
lived in the orchard house many years ago and when Eric moves in he finds his
grandfathers journals and prepares to write them into a book. When Eric first
sets eyes on Lydie, he falls in love instantly with her, but has to struggle
with his own desires for a married woman and her husband whom he respects and
likes. Tragedy, betrayal, struggles and high emotion blend into a story of
romance and friendships for all the people involved.
